CONSUMER EDUCATION! Why it must be a subject for school and community?
A consumer is the most important person for every business, without a consumer there is no business.Customer is not our problem ,but is there to give us business.
These are the most of words given to workers when oriented to work in a business enterprise, especially in the commercial sector where they will meet people for their products and services to persuade them to buy.
Despite being given customer care tips ,there can abuse them as they frustrated by the work,or when corrupted by a hive of activities. As a consumer it is good to be an informed buyer who have knowledge of your rights when served in a supermarket,hardware,barber/saloon,hospital,school or where you pay bills such as of electrity, rent, bank ,water or traffic fees.It is very important to be served in a hospitable friendly environment.
Every person is a consumer at one point in time or place no matter how rich, poor or self suficient you are all we need someone's products in the form of goods or services at a specific time in our life.
Therefore to be a happy consumer is helpful for you to be a well served person whenever you visit any enterprise to seek and buy their products.
In Zimbabwe an organisation known as Consumer Council of Zimbabwe(C.C.Z), was formed by a group of volunteers women in the city of Bulawayo who were concerned with the prices fluctuations prevailing in different market places around the country.Their main objective is to check and compare prices for their own knowledge, aspects of product quality, services which seems to be below standard. Intially they called themselves the Vigilence commitee which was formed in 1955 and aimed at meeting the protective needs of the consumer and have an micable understanding between the seller and the consumer.
Where and when they found prices too high they report to the police.By that time in Zimbabwe it was irregal to over charge products ,especially the basic commodities.
Around 1975 their efforts was recognised and acknowledged by the government and then restructured to be the complain 's board in Zimbabwe for every consumer queries and they legally contest for justice in courts.
Their main goals is to expose unscruplous traders,to be price watchdogs or weed out poor trade practices such as selling expired products ,promoting Zimbabwean products' incentive scheme and monitoring cost of living.
They act as mediator between the consumer and the trader, monitoring the standard of the products ranging from product quality, packaging, for instance if the product is said to be 4kg and then if reweighed found to be 3kg it was regarded as cheating the consumer.
They also worked with other organisations such as Standard Associations and international consumer boards.Their role is to inform consumers of their rights and and responsibilities, educate consumers against buying counterfeit products, defects ,harmful production. They educate consumers through media ,workshops, and other gatherings.
Consumerism is not a brainchild of the Zimbabweans. It started in USA where the rights of the consumers and are responsibilities were recognised and ,compaign awareness carried over in all states to fully inform every consumer about own rights.
Role of the Teachers in Consumer Education in the schools is wide as they play the role of being community agents responsible for educating the children to know their rights as consumers.
Teachers should educate not only school children ,but even the community members about their rights and responsibilities as consumers.
They (teachers) should also help consumers to carry investigations of complaints and how to join or form consumer clubs and advocate for their rights and responsibilities.

For a company to cope with the ever changing way of doing business .The employees need on going training programmes to help them have self-confidence and refreshing their technical skills.

Games people play in business and Market
Dealing with people means directing their emotional conscience instead of bribing them taking advantage of their desperation.
An organisation is for the people who work in it and those who buy the products and services.Eric Berne in around 1950s developed a theory of communication called Transactional Analysis (TA).This theory lists three ego states exist in each of us. These are Organisation's Agent/worker and the Customer. We often switch from one ego state to another depending on the situational position we are.
People are usually not aware of how their behaviour looks to others and understanding TA helps us better control our emotions and modify our behaviour.
Playing the agent /sponsor game:
(a)The Nurturing Agent
This person characteristically calls you "my dear " and says things such as "how bet" or "don't worry".They express concern , care ,reassurance ,support ,praise ("well done").
(b)The critical sponsor
This person makes pronouncements such as "you can't do that " or "it shouldn't be allowed " . These people are usually judgemental and their pronouncements are never based on the facts or an analysis of a situation. They are often opinionated ,judgemental, blaming , faultfinding.
PLAYING CUSTOMER GAME: Such a person maintains all the impulses of a customer and expresses feelings and emotional responses.
(a)The natural customer
Enjoys your products and services ,laughter and funny. This person says "sounds great" or "yes lets buy it".
(b)The Rebellious customer
Throws temper tantrums or sulks or refuses to cooperate and says things such as "I don't care" or "why should I do it?" More subtly they make statements like"don't take any orders of him " and "oh don't bother me.''
