Inorder to choose attractive clothes that are well designed and styles that are suitable for your particular type of figure ,you should know something about the principles of design. These are proportion, balance ,harmony ,rhythm and emphasis.
Proportion :If the size or the part of a design in relation to that of another is correct principle of proportion must be observed.
The lines of a design divided the garment into various parts and by spacing these parts correctly to make up the whole , a pleasing proportion is achieved. The human body is an example of good proportion.
In choosing pattern or a garment ,it is important that the various parts of its design such as the length of the skirt ,the size of the collar ,the width of a flanel ,the length of a bodice or the width of sleeves, should be in pleasing relationship with your figure. If you have any figure weakness you ought to choose a style that will camoufrage that weakness and accentuate your pleasing features so that you may have the good proportions of the normal figure.
Balance: If a garment or an outfit is to be restful to the eyes and have a pleasing appearance,it should be well balanced. The bodice of a dress has too many lines or is over-trimmed ,while the skirt is quite plain ,you will not have a well -balanced garment .The trimming applied to one part of the garment should be counter-balanced by some form of trimming on the other.By making the correct use of accessories such as a handbag ,costume ,jewellery ,a scarf or a loose collar. It is also possible to have a well -balanced outfit.
When pockets of the same size are placed on the hipline ,or pleats are grouped below the waist that equal distances from the centre front line ,the garment will be equally balanced on either side. This is known as formal balance and is particulary suitable for school and street wear.
When a line or a trimming on one side of the skirt is not repeated on the other side,it may be counter-balanced with a shorter line or a smaller trimming on the bodice placed farther away fro the centre on the other side. This is known as informal balance and is often used for the softer ,draped frocks suitable for afternoon and evening wear
Harmony is,if all the parts of a design or outfit are to form a pleasing combination there must be an interrelationship of the parts so that a harmonious whole may be achieved. No design can be considered good if it lacks unity .
The lines of the design should conform to those of the figure, the colours used should form a related or a contracting harmony ,and the fabrics that are used together should be similar textures.Inorder to achieve unity in design .It's necessary to stress a single type of line and shape ,one value and one colour and one texture of a fabric. This however ,does not mean that there is no variety the design will be monotonous.
The personal appearance should to create a harmonious impression to wear the clothes that are suitable for the figure and the purpose of which they are required.
Rhythm and Emphasis: no a detailed discussion of rhythm and emphasis .When talking of rhythm it is regular repetition of shape ,design in clothing and there is a certain sense of movement.Whilst emphasis refers to areas that draw greater attention in clothes .This can be seen in the use of designs, shape ,value ,fabric texture and so on.Having the idea of variety in your wardrobe by using different designs ,colours etc .It prevents the clothing fashion trends from boring.
