Interior Decoration of our Houses

Through try and error children arrange furniture in a desirable manner following the principles of interior design.
To follow successfully the basic concepts and principles of interior decoration in our houses one should have a knowledge of:
Proportion and scale, balance, harmony, rhythm, emphasis ,texture ,pattern ,line and colour.
Proportion and scale are the relationship of masses and areas to one another .It closely related to scale which refers to the size of objects such as chairs ,rooms pictures in relation to one another and to the human body.A person in a small room seems to be large and in large room is small.
All furnishings should be scaled to people using the room and space they occupy. All furnishings should be scaled to people using the room and the space. they occupy.Proportion is good when relationships are harmonious.A chair is said to be well proportioned if its height ,depth ,width and thickness contribute to a pleasing whole.
The actual sizes are affected by other factors such as colour ,texture ,pattern and light.
This can be used to improve on poor proprtions .A large room is at its best when fitted with large scale furnishings and small room when fitted with small scale furnishings.
Balance: is a relationship of parts of a whole to one another .Good balance in a room creates a definite feelings of the rest and order while lack of balance make a person feel uncomfortable.
Balance can be symetrical or asymetrical .Symetrical balance is simple ,dignified and formal. Asymetrical is more casual one large balance ,a group of smaller ones.
Optical Balance is created by the arrangement of objects which are similar but not identical in a way that they give an impression of balance within the grouping or in relation to one another ,for example a group of smaller pieces of furniture on one side of the fire place or large window can balance on large objects on the other side.Book shelves on one wall may balance a fire place on the opposite wall.
Optical balance is affected by colours and rough textures ,dark colours and rough furnishes make pieces of furniture look darker and heavier while light colours and smooth surfaces make them look larger.
Harmony is the agreeable effect of arrangement of parts .This is what interior decoration aims to achieve. It can also be referred to as unit. All other principles are aimed to achieve harmony.
Rythm is the regular harmonious pattern created by lines ,forms and colours. This can be in three ways:
•Repetition of colour- colours close to each other in shade produce a harmonious but sometimes monohonious effect.Strong effects contrast through the eye quickly from one object to the other .If overdone this includes a feeling of restlessness they give interest and life to a room.
•Gradual change in the size or direction of objects in the sequence of colour.Colours which are consecutive in colour wheel can be used ,for instance from green> blue or green >blue.
•The use of continuous ,regular flowing lines .It is often found in borders and in all over repeating designs such as wall paper ,upholstery ,mats etc.
Emphasis is a particular part of a room ,objects in it may be emphasised and all other parts adjusted to it ,for example emphatic point in a room could be a large picture window framing the great importance some of the chairs should face it. A fire place or a piece of furniture may be points of emphasis.
Colour can give emphasis and evoke a particular mood or atmosphere.Positioning of pictures or ornaments can be used to draw the eyes towards particular groupings.
Texture can be both felt and seen.It adds variety to interior decoration schemes. Texture gives an effect of heaviness ,highness ,warmth, coolness ,hardness or softness ,regularity or irregularity.Texture affects colour, two lengths of material of the same colour ,one a tweed and another a satin.Tweed appears darker ,it doesn't reflect light.
Pattern is ordery arrangement of objects ,motifs in a room .Patterns should be scaled to the space available.Repetitive designs should only in large rooms.
Line is there and only two basic lines straight and curved. These can be put together to make interesting combinations depending upon personal tastes.
